With a severe shortage of nursing personnel and faculty, an aging population and advancing technology, the Louisiana State University has partnered with the LSU Health Care Network to create and manage a primary care clinic. The clinic is run by nurses and nursing students pursuing specialties in health care. As an innovator in health care education, the School of Nursing at LSUHSC offers five degrees: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Nursing Science.

Master of Science in Nursing: Adult Health Nursing CNS

The CNS degree program trains students to be expert clinicians providing patient care for complex health needs. The curriculum stresses strong theory, disease management, health promotion and disease prevention.

Master of Science in Nursing: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

The MSN graduate track for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner is dedicated to preparing highly skilled specialists to care for critically ill infants. NNPs are in high demand and typically work in hospital NICUs.

Master of Science in Nursing: Nurse Anesthesia

Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Shreveport, LA

College of Nursing and School of Allied Health

Established in 1949, Northwestern State University began training nursing students, making it the oldest nursing program in Louisiana. Over the last 60 years, the nursing programs have evolved from diploma-based to degree-based offerings. In 1972, the College of Nursing added an Associate degree and Master of Science in Nursing degree to the sequence. Additional campus locations have also been added to make NSU a premier destination for nursing education.

Master of Science in Nursing: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP)

The MSN sequence in ACNP requirements include core classes, clinical rotations, clinical practicum, assessment course, and Pharmacotherapeutics. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to sit for the certification examination in their specialty.

Master of Science in Nursing: Adult Gerontology Nursing

This graduate program requires a minimum of 39 credits in coursework and clinical experiences. Graduates will function as college-level teachers, clinical nurse or nursing specialist.

Master of Science in Nursing: Adult Gerontology Critical Care Nursing

The three areas required in the MSN program to AGCCN include teaching, leadership and clinical specialization. The curriculum will prepare students to fill university teaching positions, administrative roles in clinics or critical care specialists.

Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner

The degree series for the FNP program requires a minimum of 42 credit hours of coursework, clinicals, field experience and a rotation on drug therapies. Family Nurse Practitioners generally find careers in primary care practice, hospitals and urgent care facilities.

Master of Science in Nursing: Maternal Child Nursing

The Maternal Child Nursing clinical sequence prepares students for a career in teaching, client care leader or clinical nurse specialists. The degree requires 39 credits and a professional paper for completion.
